It is not at all necessary, most people speak english and in the resorts they speak other languages as well such as german, italian, french, spanish and more. Nevertheless Maldivians are pleased to help you learn a few phrases of Divehi, and, even if you only learn a few words, the locals you meet will be very appreciative of your interest.
